• Sustainable Solutions.

Cooking with the power of the sun

Providing nutritious meals is an important part of our work in Uganda. But preparing food for large groups of children traditionally requires significant amounts of charcoal or firewood.

Solar-powered kitchens provide a more sustainable alternative, reducing dependence on traditional cooking fuels while making renewable energy part of everyday community life.

  • The Story Behind it.

    From community need to action

In November 2024, Daniel Schlegel joined one of our 22STARS Impact Trips in Uganda, spending time with our local teams and communities and hearing directly about their needs and priorities.

One of the needs discussed was finding more sustainable ways to prepare meals for large numbers of children. The idea was a natural fit with the mission and vision of the Daniel Schlegel Umweltstiftung, which supports projects that contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Daniel and his foundation subsequently became the major donor behind our solar-powered kitchen initiative, enabling us to turn a need identified by the community into a practical, long-term solution.

    Our Impact.

    4 solar-powered kitchens

With the support of the Daniel Schlegel Umweltstiftung, we have been able to invest in solar-powered cooking solutions at schools and community projects connected to 22STARS.

The kitchens harness energy from the sun to prepare meals, helping to reduce the amount of charcoal and firewood needed for cooking.

For us, sustainability is not only about protecting the environment. It is about finding solutions that are practical, locally relevant and beneficial for communities in the long term.

  • Beyond the kitchen.

Our centres are powered by the sun too

Our commitment to renewable energy goes beyond cooking. Our 22STARS community centres in Kampala and Jinja also operate with solar energy, made possible through donations from individual sponsors.

Solar power helps us run our centres every day, providing electricity for lighting, computers, educational activities and other programmes.

It also allows our teams to continue working in areas where access to reliable electricity can otherwise be challenging.

    Our Current Need.

Help us keep the lights on

Solar systems are a long-term investment, but their batteries do not last forever. The batteries currently powering our community centres are ageing, and we are looking at renewing and replacing our solar batteries so that our centres can continue operating reliably on renewable energy.

We are currently looking for donors who would like to help us make this next investment possible. Your contribution can help us keep our centres powered, our computers running and our programmes continuing every day.
