The April Photo:
MEALS MADE WITH LOVE

In this image, you can see our mothers cooking lunch for our children at our CBO IN Jinja. The photo was captured by Kirsten Dünner, also known as Lily, an analog photographer who joined our Social Impact Trip in 2024. Her work reflects a mindful and timeless way of seeing the world, capturing honest, unposed moments from life in Uganda.
Why a Meal Can Change Everything
What if going to school hungry was your everyday reality?
For many children in Uganda, this is not an exception. It is normal life.
In the communities where we work, one of the biggest challenges families face today is food insecurity. Over the past 10 years, climate change has led to more frequent droughts, directly impacting farmers and driving food prices up.
At the same time, the areas we work in are densely populated urban communities, where families do not have access to land for farming. This means they are entirely dependent on buying food, often at prices they simply cannot afford.
The result is devastating.
29% of children under 5 years old in Uganda suffer from chronic malnutrition.
And behind that number are real children.
Children who go to bed hungry.
Children who struggle to concentrate in school.
Children whose health and development are at risk.
Why Nutrition Matters
Nutrition is not just about food.
Nutrition is not just about food.
It is about survival.
It is about growth.
It is about opportunity.
A well nourished child is healthier, stronger, and better able to learn. Investing in nutrition, especially for children and adolescents, is one of the most powerful ways to improve education outcomes and long term livelihoods.
Because a child who is hungry cannot focus.
And a child who cannot focus cannot reach their full potential.
Our Approach: More Than Just Meals
At the 22stars Foundation, we approach nutrition as an essential part of our work.
At the 22stars Foundation, we approach nutrition as an essential part of our work.
Through school sponsorships, children receive meals during school days. But we quickly realized this was not enough.
That is why, since October 2016, we have been providing weekly nutritious meals at our community centers, especially during weekends and school holidays.
These meals are warm, balanced, and thoughtfully prepared, including:
• Rice or posho
• Beans
• Vegetables and fruits
• And regularly meat or fish
But the impact goes beyond nutrition.
These weekly meals are also moments of connection. Children come together, play, laugh, and simply enjoy being part of a community.
Strengthening the Community
We believe impact should go beyond the individual child.
We believe impact should go beyond the individual child.
That is why we source our food locally, ensuring that donations also support local farmers and businesses.

In 2020, we took this one step further.
We started renting land to grow our own maize.
Today, our maize field produces around 1000 kilos twice per year, supporting our programs in both Kampala and Jinja. This helps us reduce costs and create more stability in food supply.
In times of crisis, we also provide emergency food support to families who have almost nothing to eat. During the pandemic, this became a lifeline for many.
The Growing Need
As our program continues to grow, so does the need.
Today, we support around 475 children with weekly meals.
To sustain this, we need:
€12.350 per year
or €1.030 per month
One meal costs approximately €0.50.
Such a small amount.
Yet it can make the difference between hunger and nourishment. Between weakness and strength. Between falling behind and moving forward.
Looking Ahead
Our goal is simple.
To ensure that every child in our program has access to regular, nutritious meals.
And with additional support, we hope to expand our maize production and strengthen our ability to provide even more sustainable food solutions.
A Simple Act, A Lasting Impact
Food is one of the most basic human needs.
Yet for many children, it is not guaranteed.
By supporting our nutrition program, you are not just providing a meal.
You are giving a child the energy to learn.
The strength to grow.
And the chance to build a better future.
Because sometimes, real change starts with something as simple as a plate of food.
“No child should have to choose between hunger and learning.”
