BE THE CHANGE

In this image, you can see Susan Laker standing in the boarding school Hopeland. Susan is our Project Leader in Kampala. And not just that, the 22STARS organisation started because of the friendship between Stella Airoldi, Aidah wafula and Susan Laker, who met in 2009!

An inspiring interview with 2STARS project leader Susan Laker:

Can you tell us about yourself and the encounter that changed the trajectory of your life before working for the Foundation 22Stars?

Picture this: It's 2009, and I'm 27, juggling the responsibilities of three children while battling cancer, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Life felt like a never-ending uphill climb. Then, one day, my friend David Wafula called me with unexpected news. He was bringing a visitor, Stella, an intern from Europe who wanted to hear stories from those affected by Joseph Kony's war. Stella's visit wasn't just a casual meeting; it was like a spark in the dark, reigniting my passion and inspiring me to go back to school.

What were the main obstacles you faced when you decided to pursue education later in your life?

Oh, the hurdles were like a marathon! Imagine the whispers and raised eyebrows when I decided to hit the books again at my age. People doubted me, questioning if it was worth the effort, especially with my health issues. But I was determined; I saw education as a golden ticket to a brighter future for my family. So, I kept going, fueled by sheer willpower and the vision of better days.

Could you share with us the story behind the creation of 22STARS Jewelry and the 22STARS Foundation?

Absolutely! After Stella's eye-opening visit, I began crafting paper bead jewelry to support my family. When she returned to Uganda and saw the progress, she was over the moon! We talked about the kids in Acholi Quarters who couldn't afford school. That's when the light bulb moment happened—we could use the jewelry proceeds to fund education. And so, 22STARS Jewelry and the 22STARS Foundation were born, turning colorful beads into bright futures!

What initiatives did you undertake as the project leader in Kampala, and how did you deal with the challenges you faced?

Leading the project in Kampala was a whirlwind of excitement and hurdles. I launched programs to empower the youth and break down societal barriers. Despite facing age and health-related discrimination, I charged ahead with a fiery passion for education and advocacy. It was no walk in the park, but the support from my community and my unwavering spirit kept me on track.

What advice do you have for others facing similar challenges to what you've overcome?

Here's my advice: Embrace yourself and shatter those societal chains! Never, ever give up on your dreams. When life throws curveballs, there's always a way to knock them out of the park. Stay strong, keep persevering, and know that every challenge is an opportunity in disguise.

Can you tell me what did you graduate in and what are your aspirations now?

I proudly graduated in Public Administration and Management in just two years. I loved diving into subjects like human resources, communication, bookkeeping, and administrative law. Looking ahead, I'm all about empowering the next generation. I aim to use my education and experiences to drive social change and uplift communities. With the amazing support from Stella and the 22STARS team, I'm ready to see where this journey takes me next!

In conclusion, what message would you like to leave with our audience?

I want everyone to know that no matter the obstacles, you have the power to rise above them. My journey is a living testament to the magic of resilience, education, and community spirit. So, believe in yourself and keep pushing for a brighter tomorrow!
